The Machine

Posted by Christine on January 28, 2013 in Uncategorized |

It should come as no shock that Rory LOVES to eat….look at him; he is one solid mass. He doesn’t just eat though, he inhales his food, and there are sound effects with every spoon; like the philharmonic presides around our dinner table every night.

Listen lady, we could sell tickets to let you watch this eating fiasco. Poor kid sits there, mouth agape, waiting until you shovel another spoonful in. The boy has been known to pull out a baby sized switchblade and cut you for hesitating too long on the next spoon.

I’m not sure he even tastes half the food we give to him. I could probably swap out his flavorful pears for mashed up brussel sprouts and the kid wouldn’t notice.

He is actually rather impressive in his take down skills. We refer to him as “the machine”. I do hope his eating continues to be so easy as there are many days we still struggle to get Cardin to eat. The two could not be more polar opposite.

Parent Teacher Conference

Posted by Christine on January 22, 2013 in Uncategorized |

Today, we are scheduled to meet Cardin’s preschool teacher for a parent teacher conference. Listen lady, that whole sentence makes me feel as though I have a job, mortgage, and 2 kids. %*$? me.

The intent is to help decide on enrollment for next school year and get the recommendation of the teacher. Right now, we plan to do another year of preschool, but we must decide on which class to enroll Cardin in so she gets the most benefit. Kindergarten is not on the table.

One of the things we are most interested to know about is whether or not Cardin talks while she is at school. Kid doesn’t shut up at home, but we have noticed, that she seems to clam up when we enter preschool. If only our house had the same effect starting at 8 pm every night! Maybe preschool has a magically non talking sphere? We are particularly interested given her speech delay to know if her teachers can understand her.

I’m curious her interaction with her classmates as well. She has certainty gotten bolder and braver this past year. I can see it when we are around other children; she is no longer as timid and shy.

My mommy instinct tells me she is bored with many of the activities they ask her to do;like coloring. She can do an excellent job, when she wants to. However, when she is bored or not paying attention, and lets face it, she has my genes, she goes all Picasso on her projects.

I’d be lying if I wasn’t a little bit nervous. Last time I went to one of these things, I was in trouble…

Toothy

Posted by Christine on January 17, 2013 in Uncategorized |

Rory is 8 months old today and the other night we noticed his first tooth popping through. Immediately, I threw a steak in front of him and was all, “have at it you carnivore”.

I’ll miss his toothless grin, but he showed no signs of teething; in fact, I was a bit surprised to hear the spoon clink against his tooth while I fed him. He hasn’t been the slightest bit fussy or restless during the night.

Hopefully, the trend continues because Cardin was beyond restless while teething. After many, MANY unsuccessful attempts to get her to go back to sleep we finally just threw in the towel and would let her roam the living room while we took turns napping during the wee hours of the morning. Listen lady, those are days that I do not wish to repeat.

Bragging Rights

Posted by Christine on January 15, 2013 in Uncategorized |

Brett and I have had a fierce competition going for approximately 8 months now. We have each been fighting, tooth and nail, to teach Rory to say our respective names. It got pretty Tonya Harding at one point.

You see Internet, Brett’s reputation is a bit tarnished because Cardin said “momma” first and he was determined not to let history repeat itself. Let’s face it though, lugging that baby around for 9 extra months should give me an advantage.

Turns out, Rory is a total daddy’s boy. He loves to play with Brett and will sit quietly on his lap at night. And holy shit when Brett gets home from work….Rory’s arms and legs go into overdrive until he gets picked up.

I’m thrilled they have this bond, but listen lady, I still get bragging rights cause guess what Rory’s first word was:

Mini King Kong

Posted by Christine on January 10, 2013 in Uncategorized |

Listen lady, remember when I told you Rory had started rolling. We were so excited. He was so close for so long and throwing the extra weight of the helmet didn’t help. Now, he is a machine; sailing a course of destruction.

Rory’s helmet is made out of a firm styrofoam like material on the inside. On the outside though, it’s a hard plastic casing, and it can withstand a good beat down. We know this because Rory has become a mini King Kong.

The boy has no boundaries and will roll with wild abandon. He crushes toys and bulldozes through any object unfortunate enough to cross the path of his helmet. You can imagine the loud “thwack” sound it makes when it comes into contact with toys, the floor, or one of our faces. Listen lady, Stan Lee would be impressed with the “POW” and “BAM” graphic bubbles that pop up every time Rory’s head slams down.

Since he is nearly done with wearing his helmet (yay), he has a surprise coming for him the first few times he tries to roll through some blocks and is all “WTF…my head!!!”
